aowell wine
Where wine has graced the table for millennia.
WINE’S GREATEST GIFT IS ITS EVOCATIVE NATURE—
Its ability to transport us to a vivid place in our memory or an imagined landscape. It’s a liquid conversation between mother nature, maker and community. Grab your glass and tune in. Immerse yourself in its theatre.

Salut!
Every wine I taste lands on a page in a notebook…
You will only find wines here that I have enjoyed and am excited to share with you. Wines with which I have experienced the entire bottle over the course of a few days (up to a week) alone, or with a loved one. The wines I write about tell us something about where they’re from and the people who make them. The vigneron is the MC. Mother Nature plays the lead. Lest we forget, one does not exist without the other.
Organic is important. Sustainability is important. Naturalness is important.

2018 Bouzeron AOC, Jean-Claude Ramonet
Aligoté gets serious here, but then again this is Ramonet. Synonymous with beauty and effortless precision, a Burgundian leader for over a century. The kind of serious that demands your attention not by force of fruit or stature, but by the tone of its voice. Clear and resonant. It’s not often we see this kind of intensity with Aligoté. The heat of 2018 was still no match for its natural acidity, but it gave density and weight—providing a textural counterbalance. An obviously well-made wine at first sip. Worthy of cellaring another 8-10 years, if not much longer (tasted winter 2023).
Fynbos & Long-Awaited Freedom
We took off in the dark. After the sun cast its indescribably fierce farewell.
2022 Natte Valleij ‘Nat’ Pinotage
This is Pinotage nouveau. A nod at Beaujolais in candied candour, whilst delivering those beautifully spiced and herbal notes of Cinsault.
Mullineux Old Vines White 2019
Decadence and depth—a white for decanting and long, lavish dinners.
Chardonnay love
I recently had a glass of Chardonnay that stopped me in my tracks…one of those wines that wakes you up inside and reminds you of the almighty power of Mother Nature alchemized by reverent human hands…
Baron de Ley Tres Vinas Blanco Reserva 2015
A seductive white blend of Viura, Malvasia and Garnacha Blanca and a solute to the traditional, oxidative white Rioja style. Bold and buttery with sassy finesse.
